In his action hero phase, no one appears to be enjoying more than Shah Rukh Khan. The romantic Raj and Rahuls have completely freed SRK from their enchantment, allowing him to fully embrace the smoldering Pathaan and Jawan. SRK is a jailer moonlighting as a vigilante in Atlee’s big action film, but he is also Captain Vikram Rathod, a patriot. What’s his backstory?
Expect plenty of surprises in Jawan, this story of Indian Robin Hood and his tech-savvy, gun-wielding angels. Jawan has several meta and pop culture references. Money Heist, Squid Game, The Dark Knight Rises, ancient Hindi tunes, and The Lion King will come to mind, but topping it all is a heady blend of SRK tadka.
Only SRK can take a James Bond statement and make it his own. “Vikram Rathod. Rathod.” “What is your name?” The fierce avatar of King Khan’s lover boy follows a new route in Jawan. Despite the wrath and brutality, it retains some of his delicate, sympathetic charm. The Bollywood superstar smoothly blends into the world of South phenomenon Atlee, which is an unfamiliar area for him. They entertain together in this high-octane action drama based in emotions and familial conflict.
Jawan, an homage to fatherhood and feminine power, achieves its greatest success by balancing individual, political, and social implications. The indication is given when SRK informs his adversary, “Bete ko haath lagane se pehle, baap se baat kar.” The scene in which he calls out religious politics and expresses his unwavering trust in democracy is the film’s centerpiece and is sure to elicit the loudest applause. Even though the tale alternates between humour, sadness, and revenge, writers Sumit Arora, Atlee, and Ramanagirivasan nail the dialogue.
While Pathaan was all about style, Jawan ups the ante with a plot and a sense of purpose. Regardless of how many SRKs show up, the women have their turn in the spotlight and aren’t treated as second-class citizens to the hero. Deepika Padukone looks stunning and performs admirably in an extended cameo. The battle of words, ethics, and wigs between SRK and Vijay Sethupathi is entertaining to witness. Sethupathi is a powerful villain, exuding odd humour and wrath. While the brief romantic track between Nayanthara and SRK falls flat, the girl squad, which includes Nayanthara, Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Girija Oak, and Lehar Khan, makes an impression.
The film’s backdrop score and songs reflect its style and nature, while being pitched as an Anirudh musical. Zinda Banda and Chaleya are the best of the bunch, but the latter is the most jarringly placed. Although there is nothing to distract you from the plot’s dozens of twists and turns, the picture deserved a tighter edit at 2 hours 49 minutes. There is plenty of adrenaline rush along the plot for action fans. Do not overlook the introductory segment.
Jawan benefits from SRK’s stardom. He does not frighten it. It has a variety of flavors to satisfy your taste buds, similar to paisa vasool desi thaali. The second coming of ‘action hero SRK’ strikes the mark.
